Potentate El Karubah 2016
As many of you know, the fraternity now known around the world as Shriners International all started in 1870 with a group of Masons who frequently met in a place called Knickerbocker Cottage in New York just to eat and socialize. This group of Masons would frequently meet for lunch and other social activities and enjoyed each other's camaraderie so much they thought others might want to join in on the fun. This lead to the forming of a fraternity that was based on the principles of fun and fellowship more so than business and ritual. Being good Masons, this group also believed in the principles of charity and being good citizens by helping others. As such, the group looked for opportunities and ways that they could work together to help others in their community and around the country. In the early years they offered support to assist with the cleanup and aid after national disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and fires. Almost 50 years after the fraternity started they decided to combine their efforts into helping crippled children and began planning to open a children's hospital. I am proud to say the leaders of El Karubah Shrine were successful in opening the world's first Shriners Hospital for Children here in Shreveport, Louisiana. As you may know, this has grown into what we now refer to as the World's Greatest Philanthropy and we now have 22 hospitals that treat a wide variety of illnesses and conditions that affect children. There is no greater joy for a Shriner than to know he helped a child walk for the first time or helped in some other way to put a smile on a child's face.
My goal as Potentate is to look for opportunities to get more positive attention and to expand our reputation throughout our community. I believe we must never forget that our group was founded on the idea of having fun. As Shriners, we must look for opportunities to be seen in public having fun and make others want to be a part of this great fraternity we belong to. By being seen in public having fun, we will make others want to join in, all while gaining support for our beloved hospitals. We cannot afford to be a well-kept secret any longer. To grow our fraternity, people must know who we are and what we stand for. By telling others who we are and letting them see how much fun we have, we will inspire others to be a part of what we do. In the movie Back to the Future, the lead character had a time machine in which he could go back in time and change the future by changing the past. We don't have a time machine, so what we do today and tomorrow will determine the future of both our fraternity and Shriners Hospital for Children. We must get back to the basic principles of having fun, with the purpose of helping children, so that we can secure the future of both of fraternity and our hospital system. I look forward to serving as your Potentate in 2016 and will do my part to ensure that people learn more about who we are and what we do so that we can secure the future of El Karubah Shriners and the world's first Shriners Hospital for Children. With your help, 2016 will be a great year for us all.
